Planning to Define the Outcome
How can planning proceed in the absence of clearly stated strategic objectives and of a clearly defined Desired End State (DES)? How does the military determine its measures of success ? Strategic Objectives The man who is ready to beard a tiger or rush a river without caring whether he lived or died that sort of man I should not take. I should certainly take someone who approached difficulties with due caution and who preferred to succeed by strategy. Sun Tzu The Art of War The same strategic objective can bring out different reactions from different people. It s the well-defined goals and desired results that should drive strategic planning. The strategic objective is the political aim (e.g. freedom from oppression, conquering neighboring states, defense from insurgents). Every military operation should be directed towards clearly defined, decisive, and attainable goals. These goals, or objectives, must drive military actions throughout the entire spectrum of military operations. Th

From Dictatorship to Democracy: A Conceptual Framework for Liberation
buy now $17.11 A seminal work on the power of nonviolent action, this classic book outlines, in a systematic way, the elements involved in successfully opposing military dictatorships by passive means. This work shows how nonviolent action grows from the fact that all governments depend on the cooperation, or at least the general compliance, of the people they govern and in particular on the loyalty of key institutions. From there, it discusses how, if a government’s base of support in society is eroded, it becomes increasingly difficult for it to govern, to the point where it can no longer rely on these crucial institutions of administration, persuasion, and coercion. This edition also considers historical evidence, insists on the importance of advance planning and preparation, and identifies key factors to be taken into account in devising sound strategies and tactics. Tactics and strategies that may be adapted for various circumstances are also included. The post From Dictatorshi

The Niccolo Machiavelli Collection: The Prince, The Art of War, Discourses on Livy, and Florentine Histories
buy now $16.99 Machiavelli was born at Florence on 3rd May 1469. He was the second son of Bernardo di Nicolo Machiavelli, a lawyer of some repute, and of Bartolommea di Stefano Nelli, his wife. Both parents were members of the old Florentine nobility. His life falls naturally into three periods, each of which singularly enough constitutes a distinct and important era in the history of Florence. His youth was concurrent with the greatness of Florence as an Italian power under the guidance of Lorenzo de Medici, Il Magnifico. The downfall of the Medici in Florence occurred in 1494, in which year Machiavelli entered the public service. During his official career Florence was free under the government of a Republic, which lasted until 1512, when the Medici returned to power, and Machiavelli lost his office. The Medici again ruled Florence from 1512 until 1527, when they were once more driven out. This was the period of Machiavelli s literary activity and increasing influence; but he died,

The Book of Five Rings
buy now $6.99 Miyamoto Musashi s Go Rin no Sho or the book of five rings, is considered a classic treatise on military strategy, much like Sun Tzu s The Art of War and Chanakya s Arthashastra. The five books refer to the idea that there are different elements of battle, just as there are different physical elements in life, as described by Buddhism, Shinto, and other Eastern religions. Through the book Musashi defends his thesis: a man who conquers himself is ready to take it on on the world, should need arise. The post The Book of Five Rings appeared first on The Art Of War.

The Art of War (History and Warfare)
buy now $15.26 The Art of War is almost certainly the most famous study of strategy ever written and has had an extraordinary influence on the history of warfare. The principles Sun-tzu expounded were utilized brilliantly by such great Asian war leaders as Mao Tse-tung, Giap, and Yamamoto. First translated two hundred years ago by a French missionary, Sun-tzu’s Art of War has been credited with influencing Napoleon, the German General Staff, and even the planning for Desert Storm. Many Japanese companies make this book required reading for their key executives. And increasingly, Western businesspeople and others are turning to the Art of War for inspiration and advice on how to succeed in competitive situations of all kinds. Unlike most editions of Sun-tzu currently available (many simply retreads of older, flawed translations), this superb new translation makes use of the best available classical Chinese manuscripts, including the ancient “tomb text” version discovered b

The Art of War
buy now $29.95 Written in China more than 2,000 years ago, Sun Tzu s classic The Art of War is the first known study of the planning and conduct of military operations. These terse, aphoristic essays are unsurpassed in comprehensiveness and depth of understanding, examining not only battlefield maneuvers, but also relevant economic, political, and psychological factors. Indeed, the precepts outlined by Sun Tzu can be applied outside the realm of military theory. It is read avidly by Japanese businessmen and in fact was touted in the movie Wall Street as the corporate raider s bible. In addition to an excellent translation of Sun Tzu s text, Samuel Griffith also provides commentaries written by Chinese strategists, plus several thought-provoking essays on topics such as the influence of Sun Tzu on Mao Tse-tung and on Japanese military thought, the nature of warfare in Sun Tzu s time, and the life of Sun Tzu and other important commentators. Since the work s first appearance in 1832, it has been read throughout the world, and has stimulated generations of soldiers, statesmen, and intellectuals. Clausewitz based his study on his observations and his own experience in the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars. He also included examples of those wars and others to support his assertions. His profound theoretical explorations of strategy changed the shape of modern warfare. The De Re Militari of Vegetius: The Reception, Transmission and Legacy of a Roman Text in the Middle Ages
buy now $105.09 Vegetius late Roman text became a well known and highly respected classic in the Middle Ages, transformed by its readers into the authority on the waging of war. Christopher Allmand analyses the medieval afterlife of the De Re Militari, tracing the growing interest in the text from the Carolingian world to the late Middle Ages, suggesting how the written word may have influenced the development of military practice in that period. While emphasising that success depended on a commander s ability to outwit the enemy with a carefully selected, well trained and disciplined army, the De Re Militari inspired other unexpected developments, such as that of the national army, and helped create a context in which the role of the soldier assumed greater social and political importance. Allmand explores the significance of the text and the changes it brought for those who accepted the implications of its central messages. The post The De Re Militari of Vegetius: The Reception, Tra

Musashi gives timeless advice on defeating an adversary, throwing an opponent off-guard, creating confusion, and other techniques for overpowering an assailant that will resonate with both martial artists and everyone else interested in skillfully dealing with conflict. For Musashi, the way of the martial arts was a mastery of the mind rather than simply technical prowess—and it is this path to mastery that is the core teaching in The Book of Five Rings. But since the two rarely come together, anyone compelled to choose will find greater security in being feared than in being loved. ; and a man who strives after goodness in all his acts is sure to come to ruin, since there are so many men who are not good ; and that in politics, it is not important to be religious, as what s important is to appear to the public to be religious. Sun Tzu: The Art of War
The Art of War is an ancient Chinese text on strategy and warfare written by a Sun Wu, a brilliant military general more than two thousand years ago. It is considered one of the oldest attempts at analyzing and documenting the specific components of strategic warfare, with wisdom that is as applicable today as it was thousands of years ago. Many Chinese and international scholars debated the exact dates that Sun Tzu waged war against his enemies and many question the legitimacy of such a historical figure actually existing. Rather than a sole general or military expert being the sole author, they interpreted the manuscripts as a collection of works pieced together by Chinese Philosophers. In 1972 a set of engraved, bamboo texts were discovered in a grave near a city called Linyi Shandong. This discovery supported the existence of Sun Tzu s. The texts were dated between 134-118 B.C and not only confirmed Sun Tzu s historical existence, but also added new sections of strategic text. To

Miyamoto Musashi – The Greatest Warrior Of Japan
In the 16th Century, Japan was a land wrought by the climactic conclusion of the centuries-old civil wars fought by the samurai. The samurai is an elite class of the society and they are warriors ruling their own local domains with a militarized point of reference. Much of their decisions, therefore, are bent on the intention of waging war. For centuries, many clans continue to fight their way towards the title of supreme dictatorship (Shogun) and as one clan emerged victorious, another would competent ruler somewhere within the land would destroy the harmonious government of the incumbent leader and, through war, seeks a way to usurp the title of supreme dictatorship. This has been the ultimate motivation for most people of the samurai class. Despite their fairly advanced civilization in Asia around those times, Japan was pretty much a barbaric place that considers violence an everyday reality. Of all the samurai men and women chronicled in Japan s history, none was as obscure and as

Niccolo Machiavelli
Niccolo Machiavelli was born on May 3, 1469, in Florence, Italy. He eventually became a man who lived his life for politics and patriotism. Right now, however, he is associated with corrupt, totalitarian government. The reason for this is a small pamphlet he wrote called The Prince to gain influence with the ruling Medici family in Florence. The political genius of Niccolo Machiavelli was overshadowed by the reputation that was unfairly given to him because of a misunderstanding of his views on politics. Machiavelli s life was very interesting. He lived a nondescript childhood in Florence, and his main political experience in his youth was watching Savanarola from afar. Soon after Savanarola was executed, Machiavelli entered the Florentine government as a secretary. His position quickly rose, however, and was soon engaging in diplomatic missions. He met many of the important politicians of the day, such as the Pope and the King of France, but none had more impact on him than a prince

US Military Value System
If the theory of war did no more than remind us of these [moral] elements, demonstrating the need to reckon with and give full value to moral qualities, it would expand its horizon, and simply by establishing this point of view would condemn in advance anyone who sought to base an analysis on material factors alone. Carl Von Clausewitz On War The US military has a responsibility to itself and society to set and adhere to high moral standards. This requires the kind of moral courage that is critical to successful leadership. It also models a healthy value system for a society that may be in danger due to its own abandonment of such traditional values. The military value system is based almost entirely on the laws that govern it, the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ). The UCMJ applies to all branches of the military including the Coast Guard. Most of the issues covered in the UCMJ include: bringing cases to military courts, the different types of court-martial, treatment and appre

Shared Leadership from Sun Tzu’s "The Art of War"
The ruler is powerful because he is at the head of a complex set of relationships. By Contrast, personal strength, morality and abilities are qualities that belong only to the individual. They are ineffective unless conjoined with the larger pattern of influence This line from Sun Tzu, The Art of War, A new translation resonated with many leadership dilemmas that are faced daily by organizations. A leader who is highly talented has all the knowledge, is brought into a company as the Savior and the company still fails to succeed. An understanding that you can have an all star performer although this performer is only as good as the team around them. Excellent leaders are able to build and create a team that exceed the competence of one all knowing power house of leadership. These concepts are evident in nature as well as the business world. Although I find in several work places the belief of it s not our fault, he is the leader or team leader or project manager or whatever title you a
